Job Title:  Accounting Manager/Controller 

Department: Finance & Accounting 

Employment Type: Full-Time | Exempt 

Location: Remote / Hybrid 

Compensation: $100,000 - $120,000 Plus Equity and Benefits Package

Company Overview 

Our client is a successful, 80-year-old private markets investment and broker-dealer firm with a long-standing reputation for stability, disciplined investment, and regulatory excellence. The firm continues to grow and modernize its finance and accounting infrastructure while maintaining a strong culture of accountability and collaboration. 


Position Summary 

The Accounting Manager / Controller reports to the CFO will play a critical role in overseeing the firm’s accounting operations, financial controls, and audit readiness. Reporting directly to the CFO, this individual will act as a hands-on problem solver responsible for maintaining accurate financial reporting, strengthening policies and procedures, and supporting audits, tax compliance, and SOC 1 requirements. 

This role will be a key member of an 8-person Finance team, working closely with FP&A, Treasury, and FINOP, and will manage one direct report. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, process-driven, and comfortable operating in a regulated financial services environment. 


Key Responsibilities 

Accounting & Controllership 

  • Own day-to-day accounting operations, including general ledger management, reconciliations, and close processes. 
  • Lead a timely and accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual close. 
  • Maintain and enhance internal controls to ensure accuracy, consistency, and audit readiness. 
  • Oversee multi-entity accounting and consolidated reporting. 
  • Act as a key accounting partner to the CFO on complex accounting matters and operational improvements. 

 

Financial Reporting 

  • Prepare accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP. 
  • Support variance analysis and reporting in partnership with FP&A. 
  • Prepare schedules and analysis for senior leadership, auditors, and internal stakeholders. 

 

Audit, Tax & Compliance 

  • Lead and manage the annual financial statement audit and serve as the primary liaison with external auditors. 
  • Support and manage SOC 1 controls, documentation, and testing. 
  • Coordinate with external tax advisors on federal, state, and local tax filings. 
  • Ensure ongoing compliance with accounting standards, regulatory expectations, and firm policies. 


Policies, Processes & Systems 

  • Develop, document, and update accounting policies and procedures as the firm evolves. 
  • Lead accounting policy changes related to growth, regulatory updates, or operational improvements. 
  • Identify and implement process improvements to increase efficiency, accuracy, and scalability. 
  • Ensure strong data integrity and reconciliation across systems (ERP, banking, treasury, custody platforms). 


Cross-Functional Collaboration 

  • Partner with FP&A, Treasury, FINOP, and Operations to ensure financial alignment across the organization. 
  • Serve as a trusted accounting subject matter expert for internal stakeholders. 
  • Support strategic initiatives, system enhancements, and process modernization projects. 


Leadership Responsibilities 

  • Manage and mentor one direct report, ensuring high standards of accuracy and accountability. 
  • Contribute positively to a collaborative finance team environment. 
  • Demonstrate leadership through ownership, follow-through, and attention to detail. 


Qualifications & Experience 

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, or a related field. 
  • 7–12 years of progressive accounting experience (public accounting and/or financial services preferred). 
  • CPA strongly preferred (active or inactive). 
  • Experience in regulated financial services, private markets, or broker-dealer environments is highly desirable. 
  • Demonstrated experience with audits, tax coordination, and internal controls. 
  • Strong understanding of GAAP and accounting best practices. 
  • Prior experience working in a collaborative finance team environment. 

 

Required Skills & Attributes 

  • Strong Excel skills are a must (advanced formulas, reconciliations, analysis). 
  • Detail-oriented with a high degree of accuracy and accountability. 
  • Proven problem solver who can operate independently and escalate appropriately. 
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills. 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. 
  • Leadership mindset with the ability to guide junior staff and partner cross-functionally. 
  • Comfortable working in a remote or hybrid environment.

  • Base Salary: $100,000 – $120,000
